Rally racer Karamjit Singh will make his long-awaited return to the sport in the National Rally Championship in Sepang on June 26-27. This will be The Flying Sikh’s first race in more than 3 years.
The championship was originally slotted to kick off on April 23-27 but due to the various stages of Movement Control Order (MCO) in place, the organisers have decided to push the first round back to June. As such, the 4-round season will end in November 2021.
Karamjit Singh will be piloting his trusty Proton Gen-2 rally car that has been hibernating in his home since his last race in 2018.
The Flying Sikh’s return was made possible after he secured sponsorship from Cisco Academy, a sister company of the security firm Cisco (M) Sdn Bhd. The company provides intelligence services, including consultation, case management, and more.
Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reports that the company was spurred to back Karamjit Singh to continue his rallying dreams following reports of his plight on securing sponsors.
Karamjit Singh made headlines back in December when he decided to sell his beloved Proton Waja in favour of a new Proton Saga. The change of cars was to allow the rally racer to sign up as a Grab driver in order to fund his racing career.
To date, there has yet to be another rally driver in Malaysia that could match the 59-year-old’s talent and enthusiasm toward rallying. The Flying Sikh, along with his co-driver Allen Oh, were the first Asians to ever win the FIA World Rally Championship Production Car title in 2002.
There isn’t a time in memory that doesn’t involve staring at cars. After discovering the excitement of watching Schumacher vs Hakkinen, Formula 1 became a major part of life. The love for cars and F1 ultimately led to a job with CAR Magazine. The untimely death of the magazine meant a hiatus from cars at lifestyle women’s magazine Marie Claire before another opportunity came knocking again.
