After Japan, Indonesia is the second country to sell both the Daihatsu Rocky and Toyota Raize following their launch last week. We'll see later whether the SUV will be a big hit there much like the Perodua Ativa is in Malaysia.

More than that, the archipelago is also set to be the main production hub of the Rocky and Raize, with plans to launch the SUV to 50 markets overseas. To be specific, the export models will be assembled at Astra Daihatsu Motor’s (ADM) plant in Karawang.

ADM is Daihatsu’s Indonesian distributor and the same Karawang plant also produces other low-cost green car (LCGC) models including the Daihatsu Ayla (Perodua Axia) and the Daihatsu Sigra seven-seater.

According to info gathered by Indonesian media, the exported SUVs will be badged as a Toyota and exports are scheduled to begin in August 2021. Production has already begun in late April with the first deliveries to begin in May.

In order to assemble the Rocky and Raize, ADM had invested around IDR 1.7 trillion (about RM 480 million) into the plant. This plant includes tooling machines for the Rocky and Raize. ADM is aiming at selling around 500 units of the Rocky each month.

Meanwhile, Toyota aims to sell around 2,000 units of the Raize each month. Toyota is still a preferred brand among most Indo buyers.

Just like its Toyota twin, the Indonesian-spec Rocky is only available with the same turbocharged 1.0-litre 3-cylinder (1KR-VET) as the Perodua Ativa at launch. The newly-developed naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre (WA-VE) will be launched a little bit later.

Though the Toyota Raize and Daihatsu Rocky share the same nameplates as their Japanese counterparts, there are some differences. These include a GR-S variant for the Raize which comes with paddle shifters and a manual transmission option.
