The Suzuki Jimny once again establishes itself as the world’s favourite A-segment SUV! The Jimny ran away with the crown as the best-selling A-segment SUV in 2020.
According to Jato Dynamics, the A-segment SUV segment sold only around 125,800 units last year. The Suzuki Jimny took up most of the pie with about 83,000 sold. Sales for the Jimny increased by 20% in 2020 compared to 2019.
Coming in second is the classic Lada Niva Legend, formerly known as the 4x4, selling 30,000 units in 2020. The number is 17% less than the previous year.
Following a far pace behind is the Mahindra Thar. The Thar sold 5,500 units last year, which is a 39% improvement from the previous year. This could be because Mahindra launched a refreshed version of the Thar not too long ago.
Then follows the Suzuki Gypsy, which is essentially a long-wheelbase of the second-generation Jimny, with 3,200 units sold. Meanwhile, the previous generation Suzuki Jimny sold 2,700 units in 2020.
The soon to be discontinued Ford-owned Brazilian Troller T4 rounds up the top 6 with 1,400 units sold.
The Suzuki Jimny is currently facing a supply crunch due to the chip shortage issue. Currently, second-hand Jimnys are fetching higher prices in both Australia and Japan than a brand-new unit as new owners scramble to purchase a car during the pandemic.
Though the A-segment SUV segment is seen as a dwindling market, the Suzuki Jimny is keeping it niche thanks to the mass enthusiastic following worldwide.
