Back in March, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) launched the Toyota Corolla Cross in Malaysia. Early units of the SUV – all base 1.8G variants – were snapped up pretty quickly, and it was only recently that deliveries of the range-topping 1.8V variant began.
Can you get the car before the SST discount expires?
The ongoing new car sales and service tax (SST) relief programme expires on 31-December 2021. Under this, locally-assembled (CKD) cars are fully SST-exempt, while fully-imported (CBU) vehicles are subject to a 50 percent SST discount.
However, buyers will have to get their new cars registered by 31-December 2021 to get the discount. Therein lies the question: if you bought a Corolla Cross today, can you still enjoy the rebate, given the current supply shortage and delays of vehicle production for many weeks?

Meanwhile, it's a different story for Proton. As it stands, the Proton X50's waiting period stretches between five to six months, meaning that it’s unlikely for buyers of the X50 to get their cars by Chinese New Year next year, let alone by the end of this year.
For the Proton X70, the waiting period stands at two to three months, but those willing to accept any colours may get their cars sooner.
