So long trusty four-speed automatic transmission, as the all-new 2022 Toyota Avanza will be adopting a CVT-type automatic instead.
This bit of information was first reported by Indonesian portal OtoDriver. They also reported that the manual transmission will continue to be fitted to the next-gen Avanza.
Apart from the transmission, the source also mentioned that the next-gen Avanza will be fitted with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, likely carried over from the outgoing model.
But that's not all, as the next-generation Avanza is slated to be developed on the DNGA platform. By adopting the DNGA platform, the next-gen Avanza will drop the current model’s rear-wheel drive (RWD) layout in favour of a more fuel-efficient front-wheel drive (FWD) layout.
This new arrangement will keep the next-gen Avanza competitive against newer rivals such as the Honda BR-V (Honda Mobilio for Indonesia) and Mitsubishi Xpander.
The same arrangement could be mirrored for the upcoming, all-new Perodua Alza, as the next-generation Toyota Avanza will likely lend its DNGA platform to the next-generation Perodua Alza as well.
The Perodua Alza’s donor car, the Daihatsu Boon Luminas and Toyota Passo Sette, have been discontinued for more than 10 years, which explains why Perodua has yet to introduce an updated model.
In an effort to streamline this regions’ product portfolio, it makes sense for Daihatsu (which produces the Avanza for Toyota) to combine the Avanza and Alza into one single model.
