![Honda CR-V is the world's best-selling SUV, right? Toyota RAV4: Nope 01]()
You'd be forgiven to think that the ever-popular Honda CR-V is the world's best-selling C-segment SUV in 2020, and you'd be wrong. That accolade belongs to the Toyota RAV4 and Wildlander (RAV4's Chinese twin), with 1.07 million units sold globally in 2020, while the Honda CR-V and Breeze (CR-V's Chinese equivalent) sits in second position.
In fact, according to this ranking by carindustryanalysis, Japanese SUVs make up four of the top five global C-SUV sales positions, which consists of:
- 1st - Toyota RAV4 (1,070,000 units)
- 2nd - Honda CR-V (885,000 units)
- 3rd - Nissan X-Trail (465,000 units)
- 4th - Mazda CX-5 (365,000 units)
- 5th- VW Tiguan Allspace (356,000 units)

The C-segment SUV is the world’s largest segment in terms of sales volume. Last year, 7.37 million units were sold globally, down by only two percent compared to 2019 (which was most likely caused by the Covid-19 pandemic).

Even as the Toyota RAV4 reigned at the top of the 2020 C-SUV sales charts, there are some new faces in the S-SUV top 10 sales ranking. Most notably, the Haval H6 (6th, 352,000 units sold), and Changan CS75 Plus (10th, 206,000 units sold).
Because of the Changan CS75 Plus, the Geely Boyue (Proton X70 to you and me) just missed the top 10 cut, coming in at 11th with 190,000 units sold.
New models like the Mercedes GLB - odd that it's grouped here - and Changan X7 also did quite well on their market debuts, ranking 18th (120,000 units sold) and 24th (80,000 units sold) respectively.

Almost half of the sales of C-segment SUVs remained in China, with a market share of almost 15%. Toyota is the top seller with 14.6% share, followed by Honda (12%), Renault-Nissan (9.7%), Volkswagen group (9.6%) and GM (9.2%).
