Mercedes-Benz Thailand has just announced today that it will be launching its first ever all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQS in 2022. The EQS will be locally-assembled (CKD) in Thailand, and will be powered by 107.8 kWh batteries made at the Thonburi Energy Storage Systems (TESM) plant in Bangkok.
The EQS is commonly referred to as an electric S-Class, but actually it’s positioned slightly below the S-Class, which will remain as Mercedes-Benz’s flagship sedan, at least for now.
When it goes on sale in Thailand later this year, it will likely be the world's first EQS to be made outside of Germany.
The EQS will be joined by the super-luxury class Mercedes-Maybach GLS, which is aimed at the likes of the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Unlike the CKD EQS, the GLS will be imported (CBU).
Mr. Roland Folger, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) Company Limited, said “For the second half of 2021, Mercedes-Benz is also preparing a series of excitement for luxury car segment in Thailand, beginning with the introduction of two new luxury cars that will captivate consumers with their finest details – the Mercedes-Maybach GLS, a vehicle that is best described as the next level of luxury SUV offering the ultimate luxury and comfort in every detail and the new EQS, the first all-electric vehicle to be produced in Thailand.”
Folger was formerly the President of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (2010 – 2015), who then moved on to lead Mercedes-Benz India, before returning to this part of the world to lead Mercedes-Benz Thailand in 2018.
Mercedes-Benz AG has invested more than 100 million Euros (about RM 495 million) into its Thailand battery plant, one of Daimler’s seven worldwide. The Bangkok battery plant is a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz AG with Thonburi Automotive Assembly Plant (TAAP) and Thonburi Energy Storage Systems (TESM).

The Bangkok battery plant is modelled after the company’s ‘mother’ battery plant in Kamez, Germany. It currently supplies high voltage traction batteries for various CKD plug-in hybrid models in Thailand, including the C300e, E300e, GLC 300e, GLC Coupé 300e, and GLE 350de.
Mercedes-Benz Thailand has also confirmed that the S-Class Plug-in Hybrid, the S580e will be launched there in the near-term. As before, the model will be locally-assembled in Thailand. The S560e will make its global debut in 5-September, at the Munich International Auto Show.
