Shopping for a used sedan under RM 80k? Here are our best picks 01

Previously, we discussed the best used SUVs you can buy within a budget of RM 80k, which came following the news that the bulk of used car buyers shop below RM 80k. This time, we’ll look into used sedans for under RM 80k.

You can get a brand-new B-segment sedan, or you could go for something larger.

Like in the previous article, we’ve disqualified cars that are either too old (above 10 years, as most used car bank loans must be settled before the car turns 13) or of “premium” stature.

On top of those, we’ve also tried to diversify the segments and brands as much as we can, rather than listing the popular C- or D-segment sedans, perhaps even from the same brand and call it a day.

If we were to include choices such as an E60 BMW M5 (yes, you can get those for around RM 80k), we would be partially responsible for burning quite a few pocket holes. Although we may consider churning out a separate piece on such options, just to let our imaginations run wild but we digress.

This list is for the rest of us mere mortals without access to an endless stream of funds to feed a car. So, this is us with our sensible cap on plus an attempt to provide some variety of options.

Nissan Teana (L33) - RM 60k

Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) offered 3 variants of the model here with two engine options – 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engines, making 136 PS/190 Nm and 173 PS/234 Nm respectively.

Like many of Nissan models in Malaysia, the Teana is somewhat of an underrated gem. Its best quality is arguably the ride comfort. With revised suspension, 'Zero Gravity' seats, and excellent sound insulation, the Teana is a supremely comfortable car to travel in. Even the fabric seats are nice, with an ergonomic design that naturally relaxes you.

It’s not exactly sparse in terms of equipment either; standard across the range are 6 airbags, traction and stability control, and keyless entry with push start button. The range-topping 2.5-litre variant gets Xenon headlights, sunroof, and a 9-speaker Bose sound system.

Equipment aside, it offers a balanced and confident drive. Nothing too soft or hard-edged, complemented by a smooth powertrain.

Honda Civic (FC) 1.8S – RM 80k

Currently the people’s favourite C-segment sedan. It has the right badge whilst offering all the space and practicality we’ve come to expect from Honda as well.

Unfortunately, the more desirable turbocharged variants are still above the RM 80k mark. The resale value is indeed strong with this one. Only the naturally aspirated ones are dipping below the mark.

But think of it this way, since it’s a used unit we’re talking about, the naturally-aspirated Civic 1.8 is actually a sensible choice. The powertrain has a solid reliability track record, which is certainly a plus when looking at used options.

Not that the turbocharged engine is unreliable, but the inherently more complex nature of turbocharging means a greater potential for higher maintenance cost.

As for the car, the 1.8-litre engine makes 141 PS/174 Nm, which doesn’t sound particularly exciting but as a car for daily runabouts, it’s more than sufficient. A common complaint is the low seats and that’s about it really, a competent package otherwise.

Toyota Mark X (X130) – RM 60k - 80k

This is somewhat of a left field choice. Instead of a Toyota Camry, we thought we’d give it a twist and suggest a Mark X. To put it simply, the Toyota Mark X is a rear-wheel drive Camry.

The Mark X was never officially sold in other countries outside of Japan, save for China which went on sale under a different model name. But with recon dealers in Malaysia, there are quite a few roaming around which means you can get a hold on one.

The second-generation Mark X made its debut in 2009 and was in production until 2019 in Japan. There’s no news of a successor yet so points for exclusivity. Engine choices are between a 2.5-litre and 3.5-litre naturally aspirated V6 mills, making 203 PS/243 Nm and 318 PS/380 Nm respectively.

Rear-wheel drive is the secret sauce here.

Most, if not all, Mark X units in Malaysia come with the smaller 2.5-litre engine for obvious cheaper road tax reasons. A registered 2011 unit hovers around the RM 60-80k mark at the moment, newer facelifted ones are more expensive. So the Mark X just about qualifies for this list.

Proton Saga FLX – RM 15k

If your budget is rather tight is limited to say, RM 20k, and you intend to take a bank loan, then one obvious candidate would be the Proton Saga FLX.

The Proton Saga FLX was launched circa 2011 as an update to the Saga FL and was sold until 2016. The main change from the FL was the introduction of the now infamous Punch-sourced Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that replaced the 4-speed automatic transmission.

The update also added ABS and EBD in the Executive variant. It was offered with a sole 1.3-litre engine at launch, and was later joined by the Saga FLX SE with a 1.6-litre engine.

The 1.3-litre CamPro IAFM+ engine makes 95 PS/120 Nm while the 1.6-litre unit in the Saga FLX SE makes 110 PS/150 Nm. Both are paired to the Punch CVT, which has received its share of flak over the years. But as a dependable Point-A-to-Point-B car, the Proton Saga FLX will have you covered.

Mazda 3 (BM) – RM 60k - 80k

Shopping for a used sedan under RM 80k? Here are our best picks 16

Since we couldn’t include the F30 BMW 3 Series, a sensible option that would please driving enthusiasts would be the BM-generation Mazda 3. No rear-wheel drive here but still a pleasant steer nonetheless.

Steering response is direct and intuitive, driving position is fantastic, and pedal calibration is perfect. The Mazda 3's driving experience is peerless when you compare amongst its class. Everything just works in sync to provide a harmonious driving experience.

Comfort isn’t its strongest suit though, as the suspension is on the firmer side and cabin insulation isn’t quite up to par. It’s also not particularly spacious either. Hence this is for those who place driving experience above others.

All variants of the Mazda 3 are powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine that makes 164 PS/210 Nm, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Conclusion

And there we have it, a diverse-ish yet sensible list of used sedans you can buy under RM 80k. There’s something for everyone; Nissan Teana for maximum comfort, Honda Civic for space and practicality, Mazda 3 for the drivers, Toyota Mark X for those who want to stand out, and Proton Saga for those with a tight budget.
