Lynk & Co 01 and Nio ES8's 5-star Euro NCAP scores prove that Chinese cars are not 'tin kosong' 01

It’s amazing to see how far Chinese cars have advanced in the past few years. Though there are some Chinese cars with questionable reputations on safety, these two Chinese SUVs have at least made quite an impact with their Euro NCAP scores.

In its latest report, the Lynk & Co 01 and Nio ES8 were among five new cars that were awarded the full 5-star Euro NCAP rating. The other three models were the Audi Q4 e-tron, the Toyota Mirai, and the Subaru Outback.

Though the Lynk & Co 01 has been on sale in China since 2017, European sales only started in 2020 in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Sweden.

According to Euro NCAP’s report, the 01 scored 96% or 36.8 points out of 38 which is the highest score ever recorded in the adult occupant protection test in 2021 so far. The SUV achieved full marks in the lateral impact as well as rescue and extrication tests.

However, the 01 lost out points in terms of safety protection for children under the age of 10. The lack of Isofix child seat anchoring points on the front passenger seat and integrated child restraint seat system were reasons for the 01 to score only 87% in child occupant safety.

The European-spec 01 comes with an ADAS suite that includes adaptive cruise control, AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection as well as lane keeping assist. All of these features are enough for the Euro NCAP to award the 01 81% in safety assists.

Meanwhile, the bigger Nio ES8 also received a 5-star rating from the European safety body. The 6-seater electric SUV scored less than the Lynk & Co 01 in both the adult and child occupant protection test with 82% and 84% respectively.

In the video of the ES8’s crash test, part of the B-pillar’s trim was detached but Euro NCAP has clarified in the report that this was actually due to incorrect re-fitting of the trim by the test laboratory following the installation of sensors.

On the other hand, the ES8 scored much higher than the 01 in terms of safety assists with a score of 92%. The ES8’s AEB system performed well in tests of its response to other vehicles, with collisions avoided or mitigated in the great majority of test situations.

In a statement, Euro NCAP’s Secretary General, Michiel van Ratingen, has expressed praises on the Chinese SUV’s high scores adding that ‘Made in China’ is no longer a "pejorative term when it comes to car safety".

“Here we have two new cars, both Chinese-developed, performing extremely well in our tests,” said van Ratingen. “It’s clear that all manufacturers know that Euro NCAP will hold them to high standards if they want to sell cars in Europe and gratifying that they are prepared to make the investment to get the best safety ratings.”
