Earlier today, the all-new 2021 Suzuki Jimny was launched in Malaysia. Naturally, some eyebrows were raised regarding the dainty SUV's price tag: RM 168,900 - and that's without insurance but with 50% SST discount applied.

Though it isn't cheap, interest in the made-in-Japan (CBU) SUV has been strong. Our sources within Naza Eastern Motors - the new distributor of Suzuki models here - tells us that over 50 orders for the Jimny have been placed.

In other words, all available (and some incoming!) units have been accounted for. The first batch of four display cars - in all four colours offered - will be going to new owners, and so will the 20 plus units coming in the next batch.

Meanwhile, we've been told that at least two royal figures have placed orders for their units. A peek at Suzuki Cars Malaysia's showroom in Petaling Jaya sees people making a beeline for the Jimny as well.

However, just how many Suzuki Jimnys will be imported to Malaysia is yet to be disclosed. Rest assured, more units will be coming in, and orders are still accepted.

Suzuki Jimny specs in Malaysia

Powering the stout SUV is a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre K15B four-cylinder petrol mill, making 102 PS and 130 Nm. Power's sent through a four-speed automatic, and a part-time four-wheel drive (4WD) system is standard fitment.

As for creature comforts, it gets LED projector headlamps, automatic air conditioning, and a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay.

No active safety for the Malaysian-spec car - ours makes do with just two airbags, but it gets anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic safety program (ESP).

It may seem a little spartan, but the Jimny's value lies on a more intrinsic level. It's been a hit with buyers because of its iconic status, and with the growing age of electrification, there might not be something so mechanically simple yet robust with an iconic design like this in the future.
