The current-generation Perodua Myvi was launched in late-2017 and the next-generation model should be arriving before 2025.
With any generational changes, an update in the powertrain department is to be expected. As such, could the next-generation Perodua Myvi get the powertrain from the Perodua Ativa – Perodua’s current technology showcase?
After all, new features found in Perodua’s technology showcase models typically trickle down to other models, like how the Myvi’s ASA AEB suite, LED headlights, and auto start-stop got trickled down to other models like the Bezza and Axia.
Thus, we reckon that it is very possible for the next-generation Myvi to get the Dual-mode (D-CVT) from the Ativa, as well as the turbocharged three-pot engine.
In the Ativa, the turbocharged 1KR-VET produces 98 PS at 6,000 rpm and 140 Nm from 2,400 rpm to 4,000 rpm. While power output is 5 PS down compared to the Myvi’s naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre engine, torque is 3 Nm more and arrives much earlier (2,400 rpm vs 4,200 rpm).
Unlike traditional belt- or chain-driven CVTs, what sets the Ativa’s D-CVT apart from the competition is its combination of steel chain and planetary gear set. The planetary gear set is used to complement steel belts to give the CVT a more direct feel.
At lower speeds, the D-CVT functions like any other CVT, as it utilizes the belt at start-stop and lower speed conditions.
However, from medium to higher speeds, the clutch engages and power is routed to the planetary gear set, creating a simulated torque converter automatic sensation.
The end result is a CVT transmission that has less of a rubber band effect, as well as improved fuel consumption figures. In the case of the Ativa, Perodua has claimed that its new SUV offers a fuel consumption of 5.29-litre/100 km.
How soon will the next-gen Perodua Myvi be introduced?
Not so soon. At the moment, Perodua is busy with development work of the next-gen Perodua Alza, codenamed D27A. Recall that Perodua is capable of launching one updated model and one brand-new (Full model change, FMC) model in a year’s time.
