Priced from RM 101k, drift-ready Isuzu D-Max Auto Plus 4x2 launched in Malaysia

With only 28% of Malaysian pick-up truck users frequently engaging their vehicle’s 4x4 system, Isuzu Malaysia has just launched a new variant of the all-new Isuzu D-Max catered to drivers wanting a pick-up truck that is more suited for the urban jungle with less hassle on maintenance.
Starting from RM 100,999 on the road without insurance, the Isuzu D-Max Auto Plus 4x2 offers the same package as the standard D-Max 4x4 but with only rear-wheel drive. It’s also RM 6,000 less than the Standard 4x4 variant.

That RWD set-up might be handy for those who wanted to transform their pick-up into a drifting missile or even turning it into a lowrider like our neighbours in Thailand.
Looks-wise, the D-Max 4x2 resembles the standard D-Max double cab all the way up to its high-rider style. Up front, it comes with a matte grey grille, bi-LED projector headlamps with LED DRLs and inset foglamps integrated into the bumper.
The pick-up sits on 17-inch alloy wheels while also offering side steps, body-coloured door handles, and a bed liner as standard.
Decals that spell out ‘4x2 Auto Plus’ are placed on the flanks of the cargo box to differentiate with the 4x4 variants.
With the transfer case, front differential, and ancillary drive system removed, the D-Max 4x2 weighs 1,830 kg. That results in it being 85 kg lighter – equivalent to the weight of an average adult – than the D-Max 4x4.
Just like the D-Max Standard 4x4 1.9L Auto variant, the D-Max 4x2 is powered by the 1.9-litre RZ4E-TC turbodiesel engine that produces 150 PS and 350 Nm. This engine is paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox that Isuzu claims to have similar gear ratios to the 4x4 variant.
But while the 4x2 loses out on proper off-roading capabilities, it gains a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity. On the other hand, the Standard 4x4 variant only comes with a standard radio with Bluetooth.
Helping with the D-Max 4x2’s urban versatility are four reverse sensors embedded into the bumper along with a reverse camera that is mounted on the tailgate handle.
ADAS, however, is still absent on the D-Max 4x2 but it comes with ABS, EBD, ESC, BA, Hill Start Assist (HSA), Hill Descent Control (HDC), and Traction Control System (TCS).
The Isuzu D-Max Auto Plus 4x2 is now available for booking at all Isuzu dealers nationwide with deliveries beginning early November 2021. Will the addition of this more urban-centric variant push the D-Max to become Malaysia’s preferred pick-up truck?
