According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance, it is cheaper to lease a Toyota Vellfire than a Proton Perdana. No, that's not an early April Fool's joke.
This came to light last week, after a Facebook post by Bayan Baru member of parliament Sim Tze Tzin gained traction on social media.
In Sim’s post, he asked the Ministry of Finance regarding the expenditure of leasing the Toyota Vellfire from Spanco – the latter is the Malaysian government’s long-standing fleet management partner.
The Ministry of Finance replied that the monthly payment for a Toyota Vellfire is RM 4,851.61 compared to RM 4,854.41 for the Proton Perdana, saving them RM 2.80 a month.
Now, before anyone jumps the gun, it is worth mentioning that these prices were quoted by Spanco, which holds the monopoly to supply vehicles to the government, and not by Proton or Toyota.
“The decision to switch models was based partly on the lower monthly cost for the Toyota Vellfire 2.5 compared to that of the Proton Perdana 2.4 Premium,” the statement read.
The Ministry of Finance also added that the switch was also due to the fact that Proton has ended production of the Perdana a couple of years ago and some of the cars have reached the six-year-old mark and due for replacing.
