Despite Perodua posting better sales in December with 22,940 units sold, translating to an 13% increase from November (20,299 units), the second “national” carmaker failed to reach its target for 2021, due to several external factors that were beyond its control
Throughout the year, Perodua only managed to sell 190,291 vehicles which were below its target of 200,000 units. Surprisingly, sales in 2020 were much better with 220,154 units sold, 13.6% more than in 2020 Part 2 2021.
Perodua cited the impact of Covid-19, the semiconductor chip supply disruption, and the recent floods adversely impacted production.
In spite of the drop in sales, the Perodua Myvi remains Malaysia’s favourite with 47,525 units sold in 2021. Meanwhile, the Perodua Axia and Bezza were the country’s best-selling A-segment models.
Perodua has yet to release detailed figures for its line-up so we’re curious to see how many units of the Ativa were sold last year.
Still, Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad said that countermeasures for the impact of Covid-19 have proven successful so far with cooperation and coordination between the carmaker and suppliers to ensure interruptions are minimised.
“The local automotive supply chain had taken a massive setback in recent years, however, there is a silver lining as the order bank for Perodua vehicles remains healthy as consumers are still responding positively to the sales tax exemption introduced by the government,” Dato’ Zainal said.
Perodua forecasted a 240,000 sales target for 2022 but that figure will likely be reviewed later this month (January) after taking into account the latest developments and events into consideration.
Regarding the recent Perodua Flood Assistance programme, Dato’ Zainal said about 1,675 people have responded to the programme and those vehicles are being inspected at Perodua service centres across the country.
“Our priority now is to work with the insurance companies as well as other our other partners to hasten any approval process needed to repair and restore the flood-damaged vehicles.
“We understand that most of our customers rely on their Perodua for their daily activities and we will do our best to assist,” Dato’ Zainal said.
