Last year, only 274 electric vehicles (EVs) were sold in Malaysia, bringing the rough total number of EVs here to slightly less than 1,000 units.
Malaysia Automotive Association (MAA) president Datuk Aishah mentioned this during a virtual press conference earlier today, saying that the figure only includes new EVs registered in Malaysia and does not include parallel imported ones (like this Honda e sold by Westar Motors).
While MAA did not provide the breakdown of EV sales by brand, but we would haphazard a guess that the Porsche Taycan would likely make up more than half of the total EVs sold last year.
As of the writing of this article, the cheapest new EV in Malaysia is the Hyundai Kona EV, priced at RM 149,888.
The entry price to EVs are expected to be lowered later this year, as manufacturers like Chery and Changan have plans to introduce their respective EVs priced well below the RM 100k mark.
