Indonesia exported nearly 295k vehicles to 80 countries in 2021, Daihatsu leads

Indonesia is one of the largest automotive players in Southeast Asia and some of its cars are exported not just to its neighbours in the region but as far as the Middle East and Latin America too. Hence, according to Gaikindo’s data, 294,639 Indo-assembled models have been exported in 2021.

It is a 29.6% increase compared to 2020 which saw 232,175 units exported from the archipelago. Gaikindo has listed 9 manufacturers that contributed these figures and Daihatsu is leading ahead followed by Toyota and Mitsubishi.

Based on the data, Daihatsu exported 122,661 units throughout 2021, an increase of 34.1% compared to 2020 which saw only 91,472 units. As Daihatsu is only available in a small handful of markets, most of the models exported were sold as a Toyota including the Toyota Raize (Daihatsu Rocky/Perodua Ativa), Toyota Rush (Daihatsu Terios/Perodua Aruz), and Toyota Agya/Wigo (Daihatsu Ayla/Perodua Axia).

Daihatsu’s close partner, Toyota is the second-highest exporter with 67,238 units shipped overseas. Besides the Toyota Innova, the Japanese giant also exports the Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Sienta, Toyota Vios, and Toyota Yaris overseas.

Mitsubishi rounds off the top 3 and the Three Diamonds brand exported 48,950 units overseas. No doubt, most of these figures come from the Mitsubishi Xpander and the Xpander Cross which are popular in Vietnam and Thailand in their respective segments.

It’s worth noting that with Hyundai opening its Cikarang plant, we could see the Korean carmaker exporting more units in 2022. The facelifted Creta that made its global debut at GIIAS 2021 is the first model that rolls off of the West Javan factory.

Speaking of brands that start with the letter H, Honda might also see a significant jump in export figures with the all-new BR-V expected to be exported to around 30 countries. The Malaysian units, on the other hand, could be locally assembled (CKD) at Pegoh just like the outgoing model.

With vehicle exports contributing highly to the Indonesian economy, the country’s Ministry of Industry is making efforts to various carmakers to make the archipelago their base of production. Currently, more than 80 countries around the world offer Indonesian-made vehicles and the country aims for 1 million units to be exported by 2025.
