During last Saturday's launch event of Proton’s new range of R3 merchandise, we sat down with Proton’s Deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah for a little catch-up session and asked him for updates about Proton's part shortage issue.

On the topic of parts shortage for the Proton X50 and Proton X70, Roslan mentioned that the issue stemmed from the fact that there are some parts that are imported from China. In some provinces where the vendor is located, there are a shortage of electricity as China clams down on coal-fired power plants, however, capacity of renewable energy is not enough to meet the demand.

The energy shortage was partially caused by China's emission-reduction campaign, further aggravated by the winter season. Local governments in China have imposed power cuts and rationing on both industrial and residents. In some cases, Proton had to resort to source from vendors from other provinces.

As for the parts shortage that’s currently affecting Proton’s homegrown models, the Persona, Iriz, Exora, and Saga, collectively known as PIES, Roslan said local vendors are responsible for this issue.

He elaborated that some vendors that supply to Proton have been focusing too much on manufacturing and not producing enough for spare parts. He stressed that vendors need to balance between production for manufacturing and spare parts.

Roslan also touched on the topic of the lubricant shortage issue. He mentioned that Proton is currently monitoring the situation, as he said that the lubricants are ready to be delivered, but it’s not being delivered.

He added that he’s looking into the issue, whether is it a communication error, or an issue with tracking and monitoring. He also added that the flood situation has affected the transporters that are supposed to deliver the supply.

According to Roslan, Proton has closed 3 of their regional parts centres (RPC), one located in the northern region, one in east coast, and the last one in the southern region, citing efforts to maximize efficiency.

In a country as small as Malaysia with well connected highways, having multiple parts centres scattered across the country can minimize efficiency when a delivery truck can cover the entire Malaysia in just one single day.
