The Big-3 Japanese car brands in Malaysia is no longer Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. As of the end of 2021, it’s now Toyota, Honda, and Mitsubishi.
Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) ended 2021 with 17,489 vehicles sold. That’s almost double its performance in 2020, when MMM shifted just 9,163 units.
Nissan, represented by Edaran Tan Chong Motor, ended 2021 with 12,287 units sold, versus 14,160 units in 2020.
Mitsubishi Motor’s performance is commendable as it was achieved with only 4 models, 2 of which didn’t benefit from full-year sales – Mitsubishi Xpander, Triton, ASX, and Outlander.
Both the ASX and Outlander have since been discontinued, with the 5-seater ASX dropped earlier in April, while the 7-seater Outlander was dropped sometime around November 2021.
MMM credits its strong performance in 2021 to the Mitsubishi Xpander, which sold 7,397 units last year, contributing over 40 percent of the company’s sales.
The Xpander now leads the Honda BR-V as Malaysia’s No.1 selling non-national B-segment 7-seater.
The Mitsubishi Triton also benefited from the boom in demand for pick-up trucks as Malaysian businesses reopened post-MCO. Sales of the Triton grew 34 percent year-on-year.
Sales of passenger cars dropped 5.9 percent in 2021, to 446,431, units but sales of commercial vehicles, which include pick-up trucks, grew 15.9 percent, to 35,200 units.
72 percent of commercial vehicle sales came from pick-up trucks. The Toyota Hilux leads with 18,340 units, followed by the Mitsubishi Triton (9,268 units), and Isuzu D-Max sold 4,601 units.
