- This is the first time the Civic Hatchback is given a hybrid
- At least 3 variants will be offered
- Button-style gear selector instead of a conventional shifter
It seems Thailand wasn’t the only market that saw the world debut of the 2022 Honda Civic e:HEV because around the same time, the Civic Hatchback e:HEV also made its world premiere in Europe.
In fact, this is be the only variant of the Civic that is being offered in the Old Continent as it is part of Honda’s mission to electrify all its mainstream European models by the end of 2022. Besides, this also marks the first time the Civic Hatchback is offered with a hybrid powertrain as previous iterations of the Civic Hybrid were only offered as a sedan.
Overall, the European-spec Civic Hatchback e:HEV is largely similar to the one sold in various markets including Japan and North America. Sadly, even with a hybrid powertrain, the hatchback is unlikely to be sold in our part of the world.

Powering the Civic Hatchback e:HEV is a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle engine that is paired with a couple of compact, electric motors. Combined, the hybrid system produces 184 PS and 315 Nm.

Still, the e:HEV powertrain on the Civic Hatchback has one of the highest figures of thermal efficiency within the automotive industry for a production road car at 41%. The engine itself is controlled by a new, compact Power Control unit that sits under the bonnet with the other powertrains.
The Civic Hatchback e:HEV is paired to an eCVT that drives the front wheels. Unlike its Thai sedan counterpart which uses a traditional gear selector, the EU Civic uses a button-type selector.
Aside from that, the Civic Hatchback e:HEV is largely similar to the sedan or even the regular petrol-powered hatchback. Features for the European-spec model depending on the variant include a 10.2-inch LCD panel for the driver, a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility as well as 12 premium Bose speakers.

Speaking of the variants, three were announced which are Elegance, Sport, and Advance with the latter being the highest trim.
In terms of safety, the Civic Hatchback e:HEV comes with 11 airbags and the full Honda Sensing ADAS suite which includes:
- Lane Keep Assist (LKA)
- i-ACC
- Low Speed Braking Control
- Collision Mitigation Braking System
- Blind Spot Information
- Cross Traffic Monitor
- Traffic Jam Assist
The Civic Hatchback e:HEV will be built in Japan, following the closure of Honda’s UK plant in Sunderland. It is expected to arrive in Europe from Autumn 2022.
As for Malaysia, we could be getting the Civic Sedan e:HEV but it wouldn’t be launched here so soon as Honda Malaysia has other plans in store for 2022 including the expected launch of the all-new HR-V and BR-V.
