The just-launched-in-Malaysia 2021 Suzuki Jimny is a car many would deem to be a little off-kilter, equally loved and chided online - considering its RM 168,900 asking price.
Yet, the first two shipments have been sold out, and all four cars you see in these pictures have all been accounted for. There's been lots of comments about it being 'low-spec' and how dare it not come with ADAS at its price, but clearly the Jimny's value lies elsewhere.
The fully-imported (CBU Japan) Jimny is the second model heralding Suzuki Cars' revival in Malaysia - now under Naza Eastern Motors' purview – behind the also-imported 2021Suzuki Swift Sport (ZC33S).
Measuring 3,480 mm long, 1,645 mm wide, and 1,720 mm tall and sitting on a 2,250 mm wheelbase, the boxy SUV is only slightly smaller than a Perodua Myvi.
Nary a curve anywhere, its sharp lines are punctuated only by scratch-resistant front and rear bumpers, as well as chunky cladding all around.
Malaysian customers can choose from four colours – the hero Kinetic Yellow, Jungle Green, Bluish Black, and Medium Grey.
Making up the exterior kit are LED projector headlamps (with fancy washers), 15-inch wheels, and – get this – drip rails to prevent rain water from falling on you as you get in and out of it.
The inside is as spartan as expected. The very-straight seats are fabric, and further enunciating the hardy feel of things are hard plastics everywhere.
You do get seating for four, automatic air-conditioning, a 7-inch touchscreen headunit with Apple CarPlay connectivity, and sound through 2 speakers.
As far as space is concerned, the the Jimny has an 85-litre boot with the seats up. Fold them down, and there's 377 litres, following the VDA standard.
Under the hood, there's a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder mill making 102 PS and 130 Nm. Power from the naturally-aspirated mill is sent to the wheels via a 4-speed automatic transmission.
Top speed is rated at 140 km/h, and Suzuki claims the Jimny returns a fuel consumption figure of 6.8-litres/100 km, with a fuel tank of 40 litres.
Sitting on a ladder-frame chassis, the Jimny gets coil spring suspension, and it also comes with Suzuki's AllGrip part-time 4WD system as a standard fitment.
There's also hill hold and descent control, as well as brake LSD traction control, which should be plenty helpful to get one out of some muddy ruts.
For those inclined (pun intended), here are some facts and figures:
2021 Suzuki Jimny off-road capabilities
Metric
Measurement
Departure angle
49 degrees
Ramp breakover angle
28 degrees
Approach angle
37 degrees
Ground clearance
210 mm
There's no ADAS here, but there's 2 airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability program (ESP). Cruise control (the regular kind) is at least part of the car's creature comforts.
By virtue of being an officially-imported unit, the Suzuki Jimny is backed by a 3-year/100,000 km factory warranty.
And for what it's worth, it's shaping up to be a hit. Reception for the dainty 4x4 has been encouraging, as our sources tell us that over 50 units have been ordered thus far.
What buyers will get is an iconic little SUV that flies in the face of electrification and what have you in the future - being so mechanically simple, yet robust. It's a recipe for the ages.
