With its retro looks and diminutive stature, the Suzuki Jimny isn’t just some plucky lil’ off-roader, it’s a trendy fashion statement on 4 wheels with a long waiting list everywhere it is sold. If you’re looking for a used one, tough luck, as they can be costlier than a new unit.
In Indonesia, the Jimny was launched in 2018 and it became a massive hit despite its high price ranging from IDR 409.5 million to IDR 425.1 million (~RM 123k-128k). Sales were so overwhelming that the waiting list for the small 4x4 stretches for at least 4 years.
Because of this, PT Suzuki Indomobil Sales, the S badge’s Indonesian distributor decided to stop taking orders for the Jimny for the time being. According to our sister publication, AutoFun ID, the fully-imported (CBU) from Japan off-roader is only limited to 50 units a month but the demand is much higher than the supply.
“Some dealers have a much higher waiting time, especially in Jakarta,” said Donny Saputra, 4W Marketing Director of PT Suzuki Indomobil Sales to AutoFun ID. “We are only allocated 50 units a month, so the waiting time will only stretch further if we continue.”
The Jimny’s boxy styling is undoubtedly one of the factors to its success in the archipelago as it evokes memories of the popular Suzuki Katana, the SJ410/413’s name in Indonesia.
The Indo-spec Jimny is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre K15B 4-cylinder petrol engine found in the Suzuki Ertiga and the Carry pick-up truck. The 101 PS/138 Nm engine is paired to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission that drives all 4 wheels.
In Malaysia, the Jimny is only offered with the slushbox and prices start from RM 168,900 (OTR without insurance and with SST discount, valid until 30-June 2022). Unlike in Indonesia, the number of units allocated for Malaysia is lesser given how small our market is compared to our neighbour.
