Basic information of my car:

2021 Volkwagen Passat Elegance 2.0

Reasons why I bought this car

I was looking for an upgrade from my Honda Civic FB 2.0. My daily commute and weekend car. Was in the market for a D segment sedan. Most importantly my wife gave me the green light.

Car selection process

  • I had a budget of: RM 200,000.00
  • Models that I have considered include: Toyota Camry 2.5 xv70, Honda Accord 1.5 TCP
  • Reasons why I chose this car:

Despite the shrinking market of D segment market, I was always a fan of this segment. SUVs are high riding which I dont fancy. So considering the obvious D segment options availble, I test drove all 3. The Camry was comfortable and quiet but felt underpowered, the Accord felt abit clunky and I did not like its looks (subjective). The Passat on the other hand, felt special. I really liked its understated looks. Does not shine in crowds nor does it scream for attention. The ride of this car was plush (coming from civic). It reminded me of my dads W124 Mercedes E class (still have it). To top it off, was the performance of this car. 2.0 litre forced induction with 7speed dsg. Yes i know the pre-facelift highline model has better outputs, but to be honest this car has more than adequate performance for its size and segment for daily use.

The stigma of VW cars with their issues and aftersales was the lingering deep inside me, but I just couldnt resist the package that comes with this car. The lack of the active safety system was not a deal breaker to me. To be honest I actually felt safer in the Passat then the other two (probably its just a placebo effect). My focus was for a comfortable daily cruiser with good fuel economy and a little bit of fun to drive on winding roads. The Passat felt the perfect choice. Digital cockpit is crisp, discovery pro with wireless carplay has been a seemless experience. At the time when I purchased this car the R line was using the same engine and gearbox (not the current 6speed dsg).

User experience

  • I have already done 7100 km.My average fuel consumption is 6.7L/100km.
  • Since the purchase, my thoughts about the car are (Please tell us your overall experience of the car):

A real pleasant one thus far. I have been enjoying my daily commute to work and back. Always look forward for long distance drive. The drawbacks that i have encoutered so far in my ownership is the tire noise intruding the cabin. The Camry and Accord shines in this area. The audio quality is average at best. Besides this 2 I cant find any fault in this car.

Pros of my car:

  • Plush ride

  • Fuel economy

  • Spacious

  • Ambient lighting- subtle not flashy

  • Digital cockpit

  • Discover pro with wireless carplay

  • All 4 dour easy access

Cons

  • Audio quality

  • Tire noise

  • Lack of ADAS (it matters to some)

Fuel Economy:5

Price & Cost: 5

Summary :

Happy with this purchase, no regrets. For the price point of this car, it is pretty well packaged. Looking forward to put more miles with smiles. Not a single boring drive with this one.

Interesting event

Touchwood there has not been any bad events. Only pleasant ones. I am going to enjoy it. By the way anyone owning this car has events where those FC Civics keep tailgating you? I have been experiencing that alot lately. Please do enlighten me. Haha
