This here is the new 2022 Peugeot 408, manufactured by Dongfeng PSA for the Chinese market. Except that the phrase new should be taken with some salt.

That’s because underneath the new bodywork is the familiar second-generation Peugeot 408, one that was sold in Malaysia a couple of years ago.

Therefore, the new 2022 Peugeot 408’s underpinnings are identical to the earlier model, in this case, Peugeot’s EMP2 platform.

And yes, that would mean that China's new 2022 Peugeot 408 will be a completely different model from the upcoming international model, said to take on a coupe SUV approach.

Likewise for the powertrain, as the new 2022 Peugeot 408 is said to get the same turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine as the pre-updated model. This direct-injection mill is good for 170 PS at 5,500 rpm and 250 Nm from 1,750 rpm to 4,500 rpm.

Power is routed to the front wheels via an Aisin-sourced 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

While the underpinnings and powertrain are carried over, the cabin isn’t. Inside, the new 2022 Peugeot 408’s cabin has been updated to match the rest of the French Lion’s current line-up.

As such, the cabin features Peugeot’s i-cockpit that features a compact flat-bottomed steering and digital instrument cluster. The latter features a 10-inch digital display that replaces the outgoing model’s analogue gauges.

According to Chinese sources, the new 2022 Peugeot 408 will reach dealerships some time in August. Stay tuned for that.
