Now that Perodua has dropped the initial teasers of the D27A all-new 2022 Perodua Alza, the biggest question is how much will the new model be priced at?

But before we dive into the Alza, let’s take a look at other models that have witnessed an increase in price in recent times. To keep things consistent and fair, we’ll take the SST exempted prices of each model.

Starting from the entry-level segment, in the case of the updated 2022 Proton Saga, prices have increased between RM 2,000 and RM 3,000. Prices of Proton’s entry-level sedan now start from RM 34,400 and top out at RM 44,300.

Then there’s the improved 2022 Proton X70, which also witnessed an increase in price. Prior to the model getting the downsized 1.5-litre 3-pot engine, the X70 was priced between RM 89,900 to RM 115,800.

Upon the debut of the X70 with the downsized turbo mill, prices crept up between RM 4,000 to RM 6,000, depending on variant. As such, prices of the updated Proton X70 now start from RM 93,900 and tops out at RM 121,800.

What about a non-national marque you ask?

Here, we’ll take the Toyota Hilux as an example, as pick-up trucks are not subjected to SST in the first place (prices of other Toyota models have increased, but that’s with SST factored in).

Across the range, prices of the Toyota Hilux have increased by RM 3,000, bringing the price of the popular 4x4 pick-up truck to RM 95,880 to RM 149,880.

Why did prices went up?

The simple answer is a global shortage of automotive parts and an increase in cost of raw materials and logistics.

The entire automotive industry took a hit, with multiple car companies facing shortages of microchips since the end of 2020, around the time markets around the world gradually reopened after Covid-19 lockdown.

Further compounding the issue is the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as the latter is crucial in the global automotive supply chain, supplying components like wiring harness, neon, and palladium to various car manufacturers across the globe. The latter is crucial raw material for catalytic converters, something every modern-day ICE car is fitted with.

In addition to that, our weakening Ringgit also plays a part in the ever-increasing car prices. Our Ringgit is at its weakest in more than a decade. The Ringgit is currently trading at RM 4.42 against one US Dollar. 

What does that mean for the all-new Perodua Alza?

Back to the D27A Perodua Alza.

The outgoing model is currently priced between RM 51,490 to RM 62,690. Upon the introduction of the D27A Alza, we reckon prices could creep up a bit and here’s why.

Part of the reason of the potential price increase for the D27A Alza can be attributed to its improved safety kit. As with other modern-day Perodua model, the D27A is expected to be loaded to the brim with safety equipment, including stuff like the Perodua Smart Drive Assist (PSDA) ADAS suite, six airbags, as well as the inclusion of stability and traction control.

On top of that, standard features of the D27A Alza could see an upgrade as well, encompassing features like full-LED headlights, a digital instrument cluster, electric parking brake (EPB), as well as a new floating-style infotainment system.

Therefore, prices of the D27A Perodua Alza could start from the mid-RM 50k point, a tad bit higher than the outgoing model, as Perodua cannot stray too far away from the current model’s price positioning, because that’s where the bulk of the buyers are.

But, tying back to the earlier points (increase in material and logistic costs, weakening Ringgit), these will hinder any effort by Perodua to minimize the increase in prices.

Over in Indonesia, prices of the old and new generation Toyota Avanza (the D27A Alza’s donor car) have increased by about 20 percent, but that’s partially due to the luxury tax that was imposed earlier this year.

The top-spec Avanza retails for IDR 295.8 million, roughly translating into RM 88k here.

With all said and done, prices of the all-new 2022 Perodua Alza could very well start from the mid-RM 60k market and topping out at the RM 80k mark, potentially making it Perodua’s most expensive model to-date, eclipsing the Ativa and Aruz in the process.

We can expect an increase in price of between 7 to 10 percent for the D27A Alza, with prices possibly range from around RM 60k - RM 70k, before factoring in SST.

However, the D27A Perodua Alza will most likely be launched after June, so prices will bump up even further.
