As Great Wall Motor (GWM) announces its return to Malaysia, another Chinese carmaker has been spotted making its rounds on our roads and it’s the Chery Omoda 5. Besides the obvious camouflage, one thing that sticks out on the Malaysia-bound SUV is its trade plate.
For your information, the plate on the Omoda 5 was similar to the one found on a Peugeot, suggesting that it belongs to Stellantis’ manufacturing plant in Kulim. However, checks with our sources suggested that the plate belonged to neither Chery nor Stellantis but rather a third-party company.
There’s no info on the Penang-based third-party company but it’s likely to be an engineering services or a local parts manufacturer company. Could it be Continental Automotive or Bosch?
The Omoda 5's Malaysian launch won't come so soon though and it could be launched here as early as 2023. So, it won't likely be launched alongside its Tiggo brethren.
Bookings for the Chery Omoda 5 are opened in China with 7 variants offered across 2 powertrains – a 1.6-litre TGDI and a 1.5-litre TCI. The former makes 197 PS/290 Nm and is paired to a 7-speed DCT while the latter makes 156 PS/230 Nm and is mated to a ‘9-speed’ CVT. Prices range from RMB 92,900 to RMB 128,900 (~RM 61k-85k).
The Omoda 5 is one of Chery’s most important global models and is expected to be launched in at least 30 countries including Malaysia. Speaking of, Chery is getting the ball rolling on social media by setting up its own official Facebook page and a Facebook group dedicated to the Omoda 5.
Besides the Omoda 5, Chery could be bringing in a few models including the X70-rivalling Tiggo 7 Pro and the Myvi-priced Chery EQ1 electric vehicle (EV).
