33 records on lorry driver who ploughed into 12 cars on JB Causeway

A video of a heavy lorry crashing into at least 12 cars on the Johor Bahru-Singapore Causeway, heading towards Woodlands Checkpoint, went viral yesterday. The driver has since been arrested and will be remanded today (8-July-2022).

According to a Harian Metro report, the accident involved at least six local cars and six foreign cars respectively. The lorry was carrying sawdust and heading to Singapore at the time of the incident.

In early reports, the driver reportedly lost control of the heavy lorry due to a mechanical issue. However, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has since discovered that the driver, a local aged 34, has at least 33 summon records, six of which have yet to be settled.

Early investigations revealed that the driver was not driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, however, PDRM has detained the driver for further investigations.

The case will be investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving and endangering other road users. If convicted, the driver will face a jail term of not more than five years or a fine of at least RM 5,000 and not more than RM 15,000.
