Less 2 months after the launch of the 2020 Toyota RAV4, UMW Toyota (UMWT) has discontinued sales of the 2.0-litre variant. Though there is no official announcement, but UMWT has confirmed that they will no longer be selling the lower-spec variant.

The decision to discontinue the variant is due to low supply for the 2.0-litre engine. A spokesperson for UMWT said “Due to production supply issue, we would not be able to accept any order for 2.0L variant starting from August 2020”.

Separately, we also understand that most of the demand for the RAV4 so far has been for the more expensive 2.5L variant. This is surprising as the only difference between the 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre variants are the engine sizes and the transmissions. 

The 2.5-litre engine dispenses 207 PS and 242 Nm and is paired to an 8-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission.

One would think that the 2.0-litre variant would be the more popular variant since it costs RM 20,000 less than the 2.5-variant's RM 223,880 (pre SST exemption) price tag, but it turns out, that's not the case.
