498-litres of bootspace is the number that equalises the just-launched-in-Malaysia 2022 Perodua Alza and upcoming 2022 Toyota Veloz. However, don't pin them as mere carbon copies, and that's what Toyota wants to say in their latest bare-it-all teasers.

Beyond a familiar, blocky profile, the Veloz seperates itself from the Alza with a different look everywhere else. Its' front fascia has been reworked and though it features LED headlights too, there's a wilder bumper and grille arrangement, the latter featuring patterns also found on the Toyota Corolla Cross.

The 17-inch wheels are one inch bigger than what's on the Alza, and further distinguishing them is the lightbar 'round the rear. From afar though it'd be easier to tell both of them apart; since the Veloz has a dual-tone colourway and the Alza hasn't.

Plus, there's roof rails on the Veloz, a missing feature on the Alza.

Perhaps the bigger difference in price is clearer discerned in the cabin. It looks alike the Alza yes, but it's got things you won't find in the Perodua. The obvious ones are the white inserts along the dashboard and doors, patterned silver trim pieces along the sides of the centre console, and LED ambient lighting.

The bigger seperator between them is the clever(er) use of space along the centre stack: there's a wireless charger below the electric parking brake (EPB) – the Alza has an expanse of plastic there that could've been better used, really – and nicer air-cond controls, which makes the console looks 'fuller' and not tacked-on as it is in the Perodua twin.

Seat patterns are unalike each other, and though the 9-inch infotainment touchscreen looks the same, at least we know for sure that the Veloz will get wireless Apple CarPlay support alongside Android Auto. Meanwhile, the 7-inch digital instrument cluster is like-for-like what's in the Alza and Ativa.

The Veloz is one part of the Alza/Avanza/Xenia quadruplet; all of them united by the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA-B) platform. Powertrains won't differ wildly too, with the likely to get a 106 PS / 137 Nm 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated inline-four engine, paired to a D-CVT automatic transmission.

Active safety (ADAS) will be a prominent feature in the Veloz, as it'll come with Toyota Safety Sense. The full list of features we'll know closer to or upon launch; but for now we know it has Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Pre-Collision System (PCS, essentially autonomous emergency braking).

Launch date? We don't know yet, but it won't be too long of wait between now and then. Estimated prices are out already – RM 95,000, RM 20k more than the highest-spec Alza 1.5 AV – and order-taking is well underway.
