Chery, the Chinese automaker has plans to launch the Omoda 5 here in Malaysia and it could be launched as early as 2023. This means that the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro will be launched first before the Omoda 5.
What stands out is actually the trade plate on the Chery Omoda 5 as it is similar to the one found on a Peugeot, which seems to suggest that it belongs to Stellantis' manufacturing plant in Kulim.
Nevertheless, checks with our sources suggested that the plate belonged to neither Chery nor Stellantis but rather a third-party company.
There's no info on the Penang-based third-party company but it's likely to be an engineering services or a local parts manufacturer company. Could it be Continental Automotive or Bosch?
To recap, the Chery Omoda 5 was launched in China last month and is available in seven variants with two engines to choose from.
The smaller of the two engines is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 156 PS and 230 Nm. It is paired to a CVT with 9-speed sequential shift.
The larger and more powerful engine is a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 197 PS and 290 Nm. This however is mated to a 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch).
There are three variants that comes powered by the 1.6-litre engine, prices start from RMB 108,900 (~RM 72,000) to RMB 128,900 (~RM 86,000). Note that these prices will not be reflected when the car goes on sale in Malaysia, so expect it to be more expensive when it arrives.
Visual differences between the 1.5 variants and the 1.6 variants include different wheel sizes, the lower variants come with 17-inch wheels while the higher-spec cars roll on 18-inch wheels.
Other than that, the upper variants also get a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display connected to a full-digital instrument cluster. The lower variants will make do with a slightly smaller 10.25-inch display.
The range-topping Omoda 5 will also feature the latest-generation Lion 5.0 AI Technology smart cockpit. The cockpit features AI emotion monitoring and adjustment. On top of that, the SUV will also feature a Sony audio system paired to an ambient lighting for immersive audio experience.
