Geely Boyue L debuts and it hints to the next-gen Proton X70, gets 2.0T Volvo Drive-E engine 01

Geely has officially debuted the Geely Boyue L via a livestream moments ago. The Boyue L was previously known as FX11 and is developed on the CMA architecture.

First things first – its striking design. Pretty much the entire front fascia of the Geely Boyue L is dominated by the front grille, flanking a pair of LED headlights with 178 lighting elements. Towards the side profile, the Boyue L gets muscular lines flowing from the front to the rear of the C-segment SUV. The wheel arches, which are finished in black, are more angular than the model it replaces.

Matching the striking front-end is an equally eye-catching rear-end, which gets LED tail lights that seemingly look like they were inspired by Tie Fighters from Star Wars (look it up if you’re not a Star Wars fan). Specific variants can also be optioned with dual-tone black roofs, giving the Boyue L a sportier look.

Then there’s the new powertrains. The Boyue L will feature a whole range of new powertrains, including two turbocharged mills, a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder that does 181 PS and 290 Nm and a 2.0-litre with 218 PS and 325 Nm. The latter is co-developed with Volvo and is part of the Drive-E family of engines.

But that’s not all, as the Boyue L will also receive a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid (HEV), as well as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version. The PHEV version, according to Geely, is able to offer a range of up to 1,300 km, whilst returning 4.2-litre/100 km.

Inside, Geely mentioned that the Boyue L gets a massive 13.2-inch vertical infotainment display, while the driver is treated with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system runs on Geely’s Milky Way operating system, albeit the latest OS Air version.

What about Malaysia?

Seeing that the Proton X70 is essentially a right-hand drive Geely Boyue, it’s safe to say that the Boyue L here could very well preview the next-gen Proton X70. That being said, if the Boyue L does indeed morph into the next-gen X70, don't expect prices to be as affordable as the current model, owing to the more advanced powertrains.

That being said, the next-generation Proton X70 may not come so soon, as local assembly of the X70 only started at the Tanjung Malim plant in late-2019. It was launched in Malaysia back in February 2020.

As such, the current-generation Proton X70 is expected to soldier on until 2025, which could see Proton skipping this model and go straight for the facelifted model instead.

Meanwhile, Proton’s engineering department is currently busy with two models – the Geely Emgrand-based sedan, as well as the Geely Haoyue-based SUV, the latter could be called X90.
