Watch out HR-V and Corolla Cross! The Mitsubishi XFC Concept previews the all-new ASX for ASEAN

Making its global debut in Ho Chi Minh City is the Mitsubishi XFC Concept SUV which will also be displayed at the upcoming Vietnam Motor Show 2022.

Described as a next-generation compact SUV that is the “best-suited buddy for an exciting life”, the XFC Concept essentially previews Mitsubishi’s newest SUV specifically developed for the ASEAN market.

Expected to be launched in 2023, Mitsubishi is banking on the production version of the XFC Concept to be another success in Southeast Asia following the Xpander. It would complement the current line-up of the Three Diamonds sold in the region including the Triton, the Pajero Sport, and the Outlander.

The XFC Concept’s design is unmistakably Mitsubishi with the Dynamic Shield front grille given a brand-new and more muscular look while the rear showcases the brand's trademark T-shape taillights. Wonder how much of these will be retained for the production model?

Though this is technically a concept, the interior of the XFC Concept seems production-ready with a horizontal instrument panel that merges with the centre infotainment a la Mercedes-Benz. Unfortunately, those colourful two-tone yellow and grey seats are likely to remain a concept.

Add seat belts, black upholstery, some USB charging ports et voila!

Mitsubishi says that the XFC Concept is designed for ease of operation by providing good forward visibility and promises a spacious cabin, especially for those in the rear. Given how immensely practical the Xpander is, that might be something to really put the Honda HR-V through its paces.

Though there is no mention of what powers the XFC Concept, it comes with four drive modes – Normal, Wet, Gravel, and Mud which perhaps hints that the production model could come with four-wheel-drive.

Still, we can expect the production version of the XFC Concept to be offered with petrol and even hybrid powertrains. As for the name, Mitsubishi should revive one of their fan favourites – the Lancer ASX.

The previous ASX was among the first compact crossovers to hit the market and though the Three Diamonds had a bit of a head start, it would eventually lose out to the likes of the Honda HR-V, Toyota Corolla Cross, and even the Subaru XV.

With Mitsubishi focusing more on the ASEAN market, will this ASX successor run rings around the competition or will it be the other way around?
