Subaru celebrates 50 years of Symmetrical AWD with a rollcall of its heavy hitters 01

Subaru’s marketing machinery loves to remind you every 5 seconds why its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (SAWD) is far superior to any other version of all-paw power delivery on the road… or off it. And since it’s the marque’s 50th anniversary of the system, we’ll let them toot their own horn with a rollcall of some of their most iconic models hitting some picturesque routes to mark the occasion.

It’s easy to identify the very first Subaru to sport the SAWD from the short video here. Obviously, it’s the oldest looking model there. Leading the pack for the golden jubilee celebration is the Subaru Leone Estate.

window.googletag = window.googletag || {cmd: []}; googletag.cmd = googletag.cmd || []; googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.defineSlot('/22557728108/my_article_fourthp_under_pc', [ 728, 90 ], 'div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0').addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest(); googletag.pubads().collapseEmptyDivs(); googletag.enableServices(); });
googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0'); });

Early footage shows it tackling some mild off-road terrain in a bid to demonstrate the superiority of SAWD but more importantly, that little wagon roughing it out set the tone for the brand’s niche marketing that’s very much relevant to this day.

By now, Subaru has sold over 15 million vehicles with its SAWD system. In fact, with the exception of their Kei cars and the BRZ, every Subaru gets power to the ground via all four wheels courtesy of the SAWD.

Of course, there’re some rallying footage peppered in the video as well because Subaru have been a dominant force in the world rallying stage and given us legends such as Richard Burns, Petter Solberg and the late Colin McRae.

Nonetheless, being a marketing video, the new Crosstrek takes centre stage towards the end. We know it here as the XV.

So, sit back and kill a couple of minutes with some of the best Subaru models to sport SAWD taking to the road.

“Better late than never.” Some despise it, others begrudgingly agree with it but he swears by it… much to the chagrin of everyone around him. That unfortunately stems from all of his project cars not running most of the time, which in turn is testament to his questionable decision-making skills in life. A culmination of many wrongs fortunately making a right; much like his project cars on the rare occasions they run, he’s still trying to figure out if another project car is the way to go.
