September also saw a growth of 7% from August. This is due to the promotional campaigns by carmakers as well as an increase in new model launches during that month.

However, for the first nine months of the year, overall sales slipped 23% to 341,489 units compared to 442,985 units during the same period last year.

In terms of output, MAA has said that 51,987 vehicles were produced in September 2020 compared to 45,101 units for the same month last year. Passenger vehicles saw an increase to 49,966 units in September 2020 from 42,369 units in September 2019.

Commercial vehicles however dropped to 2,021 units from 2,732 units.

MAA predicted that sales for the month of October would be lower due to the implementation of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) in certain states of Malaysia as well as consumers’ sentiment to be more careful about their finances after the moratorium period ended on 30 September 2020.
