Following the success of the Ioniq 5, PT Hyundai Motors Indonesia (HMID) is rumoured to introduce the second Ioniq EV model into the archipelago in 2023, the Ioniq 6.
Our sister publication, AutoFun ID reported that Chief Operating Officer of HMID, Makmur, hinted at the EV’s arrival at a media gathering on Wednesday, 11-Jan 2023.
“What is clear is that we will be launching a new EV that will add some colour to the automotive world,” he informed the media. “As for what model it is, we will only reveal more towards its launch.”
HMID is currently offering the Ioniq 5 and Kona Electric in its EV line-up so all that’s left is the Ioniq 6 which made its global debut in 2022. The shape of this EV might seem like a streamlined sedan but Hyundai has created a new body style called “Electrified Streamliner”.
The aerodynamic EV’s design was first previewed as the Prophecy Concept in 2020. Built on the E-GMP platform, the Ioniq 6 has an ultra-wide wheelbase and sits between the Sonata and Grandeur in terms of size.
In South Korea, where the Ioniq 6 received nearly 40,000 bookings on the first day, two battery pack options are offered. The entry-level comes with a standard 53 kWh battery powered by a single motor on the rear (151 PS/350 Nm).
Meanwhile, the long-range variants are juiced up by a 77.4 kWh battery with a choice of a single rear-mounted motor (228 PS/350 Nm) or dual motors on both axles (325 PS/605 Nm). Measured on the WLTP cycle, the long-range RWD variant has an estimated range of around 610 km while the entry-level variant is expected to have a consumption of less than 14 kWh/100 km.
The Ioniq 6 supports both 400 V and 800 V charging infrastructure with the latter as standard. With a 350-kW charger, the Ioniq 6 can charge from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in 18 minutes.
In terms of convenience, the Ioniq 6 comes with the vehicle-to-load (V2L) function that turns the car into a power bank on wheels. Through its external power outlet, the EV can charge other electrical devices and serve as a backup power supply during emergencies.
The Ioniq 6 is one of four cars Hyundai Malaysia teased on its Facebook page that is due to be launched here soon. Besides the EV, the other 3 Hyundai models shown towards the end of the teaser video are the Creta, Santa Fe, and Palisade.
