Suzuki Jimny 5-door makes global debut at Auto Expo 2023 in India

The Suzuki Jimny is a plucky little off-roader with a legacy that spans more than 50 years. However, for the first time ever, the lil’ SUV gains a pair of rear doors and after much speculation, the Jimny 5-door has become a reality.

Making its world debut at Auto Expo 2023 in India, the sub-continent will be the first market for the Jimny 5-door which is expected to go on sale in May. Built at Maruti Suzuki’s plant in Gurugram, the extended Jimny will be exported to other markets though it remains to be seen whether it will be offered in Malaysia.

A hero in numerous Bollywood films

The 3-door Jimny is currently also produced in the same plant in India though it is only for export markets. This is also the first time the Jimny name is used in India as the second-generation SJ 410 series was sold in the country as the Maruti Gypsy for 33 years between 1985 to 2018.

Suzuki has given the longer Jimny the same treatment as a 5-door MINI in that the overall design is kept apart from adding two more doors and a redesigned rear quarter. So, it gets the same boxy but rugged looks as the 3-door which we all adore.

Measuring 3,985 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,590 mm, the Jimny 5-door is 505 mm longer than the 3-door in length and 340 mm longer in wheelbase. Yet, the width and height remain unchanged at 1,645 mm and 1,720 mm respectively.

Also unchanged in the Jimny 5-door is the interior apart from a door to enter the rear, obviously. The hard plastic dashboard is carried over from the 3-door along with the old-school analogue dials in the instrument binnacle.

For the second row, the Indian-spec Jimny 5-door gets a bench seat layout while convenience features offered include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as an Arkamys sound system.

There is no ADAS offered for the Jimny 5-door in India but it does come with 6 airbags, ESP with hill hold assist, hill descent control, rear-view camera and ABS with EBD.

Two trim levels are announced for the India-spec Jimny which are the base Zeta and the top-of-the-range Alpha. Only one engine is offered which is the 1.5-litre K15B 4-cylinder petrol engine that makes 105 PS and 132 Nm.

This engine is similarly found on the 3-door variant and both trims are available with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive (4WD) is available via Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro 4WD system across the range.

Pricing for the Jimny 5-door has yet to be announced but Indian automotive media are expecting it to be priced at around INR 1.2 million (~RM 64k). Do you think this extended Jimny with extra doors is sacrilege to its legacy or a much-needed inclusion?
