Perodua could be bucking the trend with the arrival of the new-generation 2023 D74A Perodua Axia, as rumours from Indonesia are suggesting that Perodua could debut its A-segment hatchback ahead of Toyota and Daihatsu.
According to Autonetmagz, the quiet-but-capable Malaysian manufacturer could be introducing the new-generation D74A Axia ahead of the equally-new Toyota Agya and Daihatsu Ayla, its Indonesian siblings that the current Axia is based on. The Axia, according to the Indonesian publication, could debut as soon as February, while the Ayla and Agya would debut a month later in March.
This is an unprecedented move for Perodua, which historically introduced its models after Toyota and Daihatsu.
For context, Toyota and Daihatsu launched the Agya and Ayla in 2012, while Perodua launched the Axia two years later in 2014.
More recently, models like the D27A Perodua Alza was launched in Malaysia roughly half a year after its Indonesian cousins, the Toyota Veloz and Daihatsu Xenia.
Elsewhere, the next-gen D74A Axia is said to be powered by the outgoing modelโs naturally-aspirated 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine, but mated to the new Dual-mode CVT (D-CVT) instead. As for Indonesia, the latest rumour seem to suggest that the new-gen Ayla and Agya would receive naturally-aspirated engines; the earlier-rumoured 1.0-litre turbo from the Ativa/Raize/Rocky has gone quiet.
The D74A Axia, as mentioned by some sources, could be lower and longer than the current model, coming in at 3,760 mm long and 1,655 mm wide, putting it on par with the Perodua X Concept from 2018.
Could the Perodua X Concept preview the next-gen Axia? We certainly believe so.
