Last year, BYD sold a total of 1,804,624 cars in China, cementing itself as the best-selling domestic brand in the Middle Kingdom. BYD also has the biggest market share in China at 8.8 percent.

Helping BYD achieve that sales figure is the BYD Song, a C-segment SUV that is offered with multiple powertrain options, including a turbocharged petrol engine, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), as well as a fully-electric (BEV) version.

In 2022, BYD sold 478,811 units of the BYD Song, a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 137.4 percent compared to 2021.

The BYD Song is also the best-selling SUV in China, far ahead of rivals like the Haval H6 (250,120 units), Honda CR-V (228,889 units), and Toyota RAV4 (167,965 units).

BYD has also sold the highest number of new energy vehicles or NEVs, (a Chinese term for electrified vehicles, xEV,new energy vehicle, including mild-hybrids and plug-in hybrids) in 2022, amounting to 1,799,947 units, which is over 99 percent of BYD’s overall 2022 sales.

According to sales data compiled by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the second best-selling domestic brand in China is Changan, which sold 1,274,208 units, while third place is Geely with a total of 1,234,746 units.

If the sales of foreign brands are combined, then the overall best-selling marque in China is Volkswagen, with a total of 3,022,537 units sold. This includes both of Volkswagen’s joint ventures, FAW Volkswagen and SAIC Volkswagen.

Toyota did a total of 1,770,767 units in 2022. GAC Toyota did a total of 971,462 units while FAW Toyota managed 799,305 units. The best-selling Toyota in the Middle Kingdom is the Toyota RAV4, which saw 167,965 units sold in 2022.

Trailing behind Toyota is Honda, which sold a total of 1,374,768 units. GAC Honda sold 722,362 units, while Dongfeng Honda did 652,406 units. Chinese buyers are big fans of the Honda CR-V, with a total of 222,829 units sold last year.
