Fatal crash from sudden acceleration Tesla Model Y's black box contradicts CCTV footage, were the brakes applied?

After several months of investigation, the report involving the Tesla Model Y’s sudden acceleration case in Chaozhou, China has been released.

The report compiled by Tesla reveals that the throttle was at 100 percent for a while

According to the data retrieved from the Model Y’s EDR (Event Data Recorder), Tesla concluded that the accelerator pedal was applied at 100 percent and the brakes were never applied. The EDR also revealed that the Model Y hit speeds as high as 164 km/h.

These findings contradict the CCTV footage that captured the crash on that Saturday morning, which showed that the Model Y’s brakes were applied, despite what the EDR reported.

Tesla's EDR claims that the brakes were never applied, but CCTV footage shows that the brakes were applied

As a recap of the accident, the driver claimed that the brakes of his Tesla Model Y felt odd on that day. He said that the brake pedal was stiff and braking did nothing. He tried to step on the brakes to slow the car down, but that did not work.

After that, the driver added that he thought the car had issues and decided to shift to P and that was when the Model Y started accelerating.

The Tesla Model Y driver insisted that his right foot was stomping on the brake pedal in an on-and-off fashion, but the electric vehicle (EV) kept on accelerating.

He also added that his right foot was never on the throttle.

Said owner also refused to accept Tesla’s findings and has called for a re-evaluation. If the owner is found guilty, he will be jailed between 3 to 7 years.

On the other hand, if Tesla is found to be guilty in this case, the Texas-based company will be held liable.
