Hiding underneath the cover is the next gen 2023 Mitsubishi Triton, battery EV variant included!

Mitsubishi Motors has just announced its 2023 – 2025 Mid-term business plan today, titled Challenge 2025. Hidden inside the corporate document is a glimpse of the company’s most important next generation product – the new generation 2023 Mitsubishi Triton.

The company hasn’t reveal any further details, only revealing the headlamps’ lighting signature, which appears to be an evolution of the Outlander and Xpander’s – slim daytime running lights at the top, main beams at the lower section of the front bumper.

Historically, a new generation Mitsubishi Triton will be announced at the Bangkok International Motor Show, which will once again take place later this month. Expect more details to be announced then.

The presentation slides also mentioned a battery EV pick-up truck model.

There's also an MPV with a lower roofline than the Xpander - Grandis to make a return?

This comes 3 months after archrival Toyota presented a Hilux EV concept in December last year, also in Bangkok. Neither Toyota nor Mitsubishi has said when will their battery electric truck go on sale, but it is highly unlikely for Mitsubishi Motors to launch the battery EV variant simultaneously as the core diesel-powered variant.

The electric Triton will be one of 9 electrified (xEV) models planned for the next 5 years, including a Renault Captur-based Mitsubishi ASX and a Renault Clio-based Mitsubishi Colt for Europe.

The Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Motors Alliance has previously announced that Mitsubishi will be taking the lead in 4x4 products development for the ASEAN region, meaning to say that the Triton will form the basis of the next generation Nissan Navara.

However, the state of the post-Ghosn Alliance today is very different from when Carlos Ghosn, before he became a fugitive, was still calling the shots.

As such, it’s hard to tell the earlier agreement on joint pick-up truck development is still being followed through.

For reference, the last Nissan-Mitsubishi partnership in this region, the Mitsubishi Xpander-Nissan Livina project fared quite poorly for Nissan.
