Peugeot isn’t largely known for its pick-up trucks but it has been in the business for years dating all the way back to 1938 with the Peugeot 202 commercial flatbed vehicle. 85 years later, the latest pick-up truck to wear the French Lion makes its official launch in Malaysia, the 2023 Peugeot Landtrek.
Fully-imported (CBU) from China, the Peugeot Landtrek is the fourth model to be introduced in Malaysia under newly-appointed Peugeot distributor Bermaz Auto Alliance Sdn Bhd (BAASB). The only variant offered is the 1.9D Allure which starts from RM 120,072.
Yes, this pick-up truck is Chinese in origin and is in fact a rebadged Changan Kaicene F70. Units have been spotted on Malaysian roads as far as 2020 but the Landtrek’s Malaysian entry makes our country possibly the second right-hand-drive market to offer the model after South Africa.
Yet the Landtrek has been receiving awards and praise in the Middle East and Africa with an 81.1% increase in sales in 2022 compared to the year before. It was even awarded Product of the Year in Ghana in 2022.
Even though it is essentially Chinese in origin, the Peugeot Landtrek still fits along the rest of the French Lion’s lineup with signature brand features like a vertical front grille with the Peugeot Lion in the centre and LED signature lighting on both the front and rear.
Inside, the Landtrek still looks as plush as its SUV siblings with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment in the centre with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as well as Peugeot’s signature piano-style toggle switches.
Attention is also paid to the passengers with seven grab handles installed in the passenger compartment for easier access getting in and out of this Chinese-French truck. The rear passenger seats’ backrest can also be tilted 23 degrees for greater comfort and the rear bench seats are equipped with two ISOFIX fasteners.
In terms of practicality, the backrest can be folded in a 60/40 split or 100% which can also support a load of up to 100 kg when folded down.
Powering the sole variant of the Landtrek is a 1.9-litre turbodiesel engine that produces 150 PS and 350 Nm. The oil burner is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and comes with a rear differential lock.
Peugeot has also claimed to have tested the Landtrek across various terrain types and climates while also clocking over 2 million km in endurance tests.
The Landtrek has up to 235 mm of ground clearance and a wading depth of up to 600 mm. Drivers can easily switch between 2-High, 4-High, and 4-Low with just a simple turn of the rotary knob.
Being a modern pick-up truck, the Landtrek is offered with a 360-degree panoramic view display as well as front and rear sensors for easier manoeuvrability around tight obstacles. It also comes with 6 airbags, stability control, and a lane departure warning system. No other ADAS features are offered.
The 2023 Peugeot Landtrek is offered in 6 colours and comes with a standard 5-year/100,000-km manufacturer warranty, whichever comes first. Would you want to try something French different for your lifestyle pick-up truck?
