Our friends at Otodriver Indonesia have reported that the Hyundai Kona Electric might be assembled in Indonesia come 2023. The electric car might be produced at the new Hyundai Plant in Cikarang.
Their source prefers remain unidentified. The Hyundai Kona Electric had made a public appearance at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2018 (KLIMS 2018).
After that, the car has been spotted several times with a trade plate, presumably being used for staff training.
The Hyundai Kona was one of the early affordable EVs that emerged alongside the second-generation Nissan Leaf and the Volkswagen e Golf.
Hyundai’s plan to build EVs in Indonesia had been announced way back in 2018. The new plant in Cikarang will be Hyundai’s first complete factory in South East Asia. This is all part of an 880 million USD investment in Indonesia. No surprise there since Indonesia is the world’s largest exporter of nickel.
About half the cars produced in Indonesia will be for export while the other half will be for the Indonesian market. Alongside the Kona Electric, the Cikarang Plant will also produce the Hyundai Creta and Hyundai Accent.
