Honda HR-V – Buy Or Bye?

Ok, here we go.

The Honda HR-V was first shown as the Urban SUV Concept at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, while the production version was shown later that year at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show.

For the Japanese market, as the Honda Vezel is known there, the model is powered by a 1.5-litre direct-injection DOHC i-VTEC petrol engine mated to a CVT-type automatic or a 1.5-litre Sport Hybrid i-DCD system paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Other markets, including Malaysia, receive a 1.8-litre SOHC i-VTEC petrol engine.

For the Malaysian market, the Honda HR-V was introduced in February 2015 and became one of Honda Malaysia’s best-selling models.

In an effort to keep the model up-to-date, Honda Malaysia updated the HR-V with some styling cues and improvements earlier this year. At the same time, Honda also introduced the RS and Hybrid variants, while discontinuing the S variant.

Exterior

Up front, the updated Honda HR-V gets a bolder chrome front grille trim piece, flanked by a pair of halogen projector headlights (E and Hybrid variants). The V and RS variants receive LED headlights. All variants of the Honda HR-V receive LED daytime running lights and front fog lights. The E and Hybrid variants get bulb-type front fog lights, while the V and RS variants get LED front fog lights. The RS variant also receives piano black finishing on various exterior trim pieces.

Towards the sides, all variants of the Honda HR-V receive a pair of door handles hidden in the C-pillar, giving the HR-V a coupe-like appearance. The E, V, and Hybrid variants of the HR-V ride on 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, while the RS variant rides on 18-inch twin five-spoke alloy wheels.

As for the rear end of the HR-V, a chrome garnish piece connects both tail lights. E, V, and Hybrid variants feature the same rear bumper design as the predecessor model, while the RS variant receives a sportier rear bumper design. The RS variant also receives fancier-looking LED tail lights with integrated light bars.

Interior

Setting the Honda HR-V apart from the rest of the competition is its interior.

The HR-V receives a unique two-tier centre console that both looks futuristic and offers superior practicality over its rivals. The HR-V Hybrid, thanks to its shift-by-wire gear lever, frees up even more space on the two-tier centre console.

Apart from its two-tier centre console, the front air vent design is also unique. Honda says that despite not having a rear air vent, the front air vents are more than capable of cooling the entire cabin.

Another nice touch is the inclusion of the electric parking brake, allowing for Honda to implement the Automatic Brake Hold function, which relieves the driver from continuously pressing the brake pedal in traffic.

Other features of the Honda HR-V include cruise control, paddle shifters, one touch lane change, smart entry with engine push start button, reverse camera, and steering wheel audio controls.

Size and space

Although the Honda HR-V shares its platform with the Jazz, the wheelbase is 80 mm longer, which comes in at 2,610 mm. The extra 80 mm in length over the Jazz allows the HR-V to boast even more space for the rear passengers.

The Honda HR-V’s boot space comes in at 437 litres, which can be increased to 1,032 litres with the rear seats folded down. Couple that with the flexible Ultra Seats which can be folded upwards to accommodate taller items, the Honda HR-V excels in practicality.

However, in the case of the HR-V Hybrid and the position of its hybrid batteries, which are located in the spare wheel well, boot space has been compromised slightly. Honda says that the HR-V Hybrid’s boot space is 33 litres less than the petrol variant, coming in at 404 litres. With the rear seats folded down, boot space is 991 litres.

Safety equipment

For its 2019 update, all variants of the Honda HR-V now get 6 airbags, an improvement over the predecessor model. Apart from the increase in airbag count, the HR-V also features stability control, Hill Start Assist, and ISOFIX anchor points.

Powertrain and chassis

The updated Honda HR-V features a carried-over 1.8-litre SOHC i-VTEC four-cylinder petrol engine that outputs 142 PS at 6,500 rpm and 172 Nm at 4,300 rpm. The CVT-type automatic transmission is also identical to the predecessor model.

Honda HR-V, Your Obvious Cost-effective Choice 11

As for the hybrid variant, power is derived from a 1.5-litre direct-injection DOHC i-VTEC petrol engine that does 132 PS and 156 Nm. This engine is hooked up to an electric motor that adds 29.5 PS and 160 Nm, allowing for a combined system output of 152 PS and 190 Nm. Unlike the regular HR-V, the HR-V Hybrid is fitted with a 7-speed dual-clutch (DCT) automatic transmission.

Under the UNECE R101 test cycle, the regular HR-V returns 6.6 litres/100 km, while the HR-V Hybrid returns 4.4 litres/100 km.

Driving experience

Thanks to the combination of the 1.8-litre engine and CVT-type automatic, power delivery is smooth and linear when driven gently. However, the CVT can get rather sluggish if the driver steps on the accelerator frequently. At higher speeds, engine noise is also apparent in the cabin.

Steering on the Honda HR-V is also good, as it provides sufficient feedback and is quick to respond to driver’s inputs. The agility of the HR-V’s chassis is also apparent when the driver is taking turns, as the HR-V responds quickly to steering inputs from the driver. The well-tuned suspension also kept body roll in check.

As for the sportier HR-V RS, this variant receives Honda’s Variable Gear Ratio (VGR) steering system. At lower speeds, the steering is able to provide tighter steering angles for better control. At higher speeds, the steering increases its steering angle, making it less sensitive to small steering corrections. As such, driving long distance in the HR-V RS is more relaxing.

If 1.8L is replaced with 1.5L turbo:

But the most surprising HR-V model is perhaps the HR-V Hybrid. Thanks to its hybrid powertrain, the HR-V Hybrid drives much better than what its engine capacity suggests.

Honda HR-V, Your Obvious Cost-effective Choice 13

Honda has also retuned the suspension set-up on the HR-V Hybrid to accommodate the additional weight brought in by the electric motor and battery pack. The retuned suspension set-up also allows the HR-V Hybrid to handle much better than before, and the HR-V Hybrid is able to hold its line better when driven hard.

Summary

With its increase in equipment count and removal of the base level S variant, the entry price of the Honda HR-V has increased to RM 108,800. Those who wants the V variant will need to pay RM 118,800, while the RS variant costs RM 124,800. The Hybrid variant is priced at RM 120,800.

While the Honda HR-V may be one of the most common SUVs right now, the updated model continues that trend as it combines excellent value-for-money and practicality.

The HR-V Hybrid is the best pick of the range, as the hybrid powertrain combines the best of both worlds – fuel efficiency and performance, into an attractive package. The driving dynamics is the icing on the cake for the HR-V Hybrid.
