Malaysia car road tax

With news that JPJ has decided to close all offices due to the gathering of large crowds, the government is now encouraging the use of MyEG to renew their respective insurance and road taxes. If you're uncertain how the online portal works, here are a few step by step pointers.

JPJ vehicle registration card

Left - old version; Right - new version

The documents that you need are:

  • JPJ vehicle registration card
  • Previous insurance cover note

Body type option, refer to registration card

window.googletag = window.googletag || {cmd: []}; googletag.cmd = googletag.cmd || []; googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.defineSlot('/22557728108/my_article_fourthp_under_pc', [ 728, 90 ], 'div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0').addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest(); googletag.pubads().collapseEmptyDivs(); googletag.enableServices(); });
googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0'); });

When renewing your car insurance, you will have to refer to your registration card when filling out the details.

For example, when you have to fill in your body type, it might not be the "type" that consumers normally understand it to be. Instead refer to your JPJ registration card for all the relevant details of engine and chassis number, make, model, body type, and manufacturing year.

Vehicle type

It can get confusing when it comes to "Vehicle Made" though. CBU stands for Completely Built Up referring to fully imported cars. CBU - New stands for brand new cars, while CBU - Used refers to the reconditioned cars. To fill up this part, just follow according to your registration card as it will be stated clearly.

Car insurance companies also allows you the option to insure your windscreen via the MyEG portal. As the windscreen is the most vulnerable part of the car front end, we highly recommend to choose this option.

Windscreens are the most vulnerable part of the front end

Since the value of the windscreen insurance is determined by you, here’s our recommended guide:

  • Smaller cars in the A- and B-segment (Perodua Myvi, Toyota Vios, Proton Saga) – RM 2,000
  • C- and D-segment cars (Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, Nissan X-Trail) – at least RM 3,000
  • MPVs have larger windscreens than most cars (Nissan Serena, Honda Odyssey, Citroen C4) – at least RM 4,000

Likewise with insurance for special perils which includes flood. Since Malaysia is now well known to suffer from flash floods during the monsoon period, this would be a good option to have.

Delivery option

After you have completed the procedures are made your payment, you’re required to choose your preferred collection method. Counter collection is not available but MyEG has postage services. Standard delivery charges RM 6 while express delivery ups the charges to RM 20.

MYEG announcement

A reminder from MYEG during the MCO period

At this point, MyEG has also stated that there is a delay in postage services. If your new road tax has yet to arrive and your current road tax has expired, the government has implemented a temporary acceptance where you provide your proof of payment on your new road tax. That means, you’re required to keep the receipt handy.
