Mercedes-AMG HPP co-develops breathing aid to help patients battle Covid-19

With knowledge and resources in F1 technology, Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) have collaborated with engineers from UCL and clinicians at UCLH to create a breathing aid that helps keep Covid-19 patients out of intensive care.

Mercedes-AMG HPP is a F1 engine manufacturer that supplies engines to several teams.

The breathing aid, named Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), has been widely used in hospitals in China and Italy. The CPAP helps Covid-19 patients with severe lung infections to breathe more easily, when oxygen alone is insufficient.

From the initial meeting to production of the first breathing aid device, it took less than 100 hours. The device has been approved for use in the National Health Service (NHS).

UCLH Chief Executive Marcel Levi said, "Everyone involved in this project should know that their efforts will have a truly significant impact on patient care."
