Toyota has just taken the covers off the new Yaris Cross, its latest B-segment SUV.

The new Yaris Cross is built on the same TNGA-B platform as the Yaris hatchback, sharing the same powertrains too.

Speaking of powertrains, the Yaris Cross will be offered with a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol-electric hybrid powertrain or a regular 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine, mated to Toyota's Direct Shift CVT. Power is delivered to either the front wheels or all four wheels.

Apart from its hybrid powertrain, the Yaris Cross is also available with a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre Dynamic Force petrol engine, mated to a CVT-type automatic or a 6-speed manual. This powertrain is front-wheel drive-only.

What about the Toyota C-HR?

The Yaris Cross is positioned below the C-HR in Toyota’s line-up, allowing Toyota to compete against segment rivals such as the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3.

Strange as it may sound, but it does make some sense, as the Yaris Cross’ design is less funky than the C-HR, which could attract buyers that are otherwise turned off by the C-HR’s design.

Unlike the C-HR’s hidden rear door handle, the Yaris Cross gets a more traditional door handle.

Wait, why does the name Yaris Cross sounds familiar?

Same name, but totally different car

You’re not wrong if you thought that the Yaris Cross sounds familiar, as Toyota did introduce a Yaris Cross in Thailand last year.

Basically a jacked-up Yaris hatchback

However, the earlier-announced Yaris Cross is based on the ASEAN-market model that we’re familiar with and has no relation (apart from its name) with the new model.

Where will it be made?

According to Toyota, the Yaris Cross will be manufactured in Japan for the Japan market and at Toyota Motor Manufacturing France for the European market. The model will go on sale in Japan later this year, followed by Europe in 2021.

Will it come to Malaysia?

We're unlikely to get this Yaris

Unfortunately, chances of the Yaris Cross being introduced here is slim, as Toyota is planning for a different model to be positioned below the C-HR.

Barring the GR Yaris, the other 2 Yaris models won't be offered here

Instead of the Yaris Cross, Toyota will be introducing the Corolla Cross for the ASEAN region.

Moreover, the all-new TNGA-based Yaris is aimed at developed countries, and it makes little sense for Toyota to introduce the Yaris Cross here, when the Corolla Cross will fill that position.
