2020 Proton X70 Fuel Consumption

Ever wondered what is the fuel consumption of the Proton X70 1.8T 2WD? We put Proton X70 through our WapCar fuel consumption test and here are our Proton X70 fuel consumption test results.

The Proton X70 Premium 2WD sold in Malaysia is powered by a 1.8-litre turbocharged direct-injection 4-cylinder petrol engine linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

A conventional 6-speed automatic and turbocharged engine is not the most ideal combination for fuel economy. The Proton X70's 1,695 kg kerb weight also makes it the heaviest car in class. But what is the actual Proton X70 fuel consumption? We find out in our real-world fuel consumption test.

Proton X70 Tyre Pressure

Before we begin our test, the tyre pressure was inflated to the manufacturers recommended specs of 230 kPa (cold tyres) for all four tyres. The X70 1.8 TGDI Premium 2WD rides on 19-inch wheels wrapped in Continental UC6 225/55 R19 profile tyres.

Proton X70 Fuel Tank

The X70's 60-litre fuel tank is filled up to the brim using the "three-click" method – have the fuel nozzle jump three times with 10 seconds between each jump. The X70 was filled with Petronas RON 95 petrol.

Proton X70 Driving Behaviour

Driving behaviour was as per a normal driver, accelerating and braking whenever necessary but the speed limit was capped at 110 km/h. Air conditioning was set at 22 degrees and fan speed 2. The car was in Normal Mode and only the driver is in the car throughout the test.

Proton X70 Test Route

Our test route saw us set off from Petronas station Brickfields, looping multiple times along Jalan Damansara, passing Muzium Negara and Parliament before hitting slow traffic near PWTC making a U-turn at Jalan Tun Ismail to loop back up Jalan Damansara in the opposite direction. We then turned into stop-go traffic of Brickfields, making our way through Federal Highway to repeat the same loop.

Trip computer reading at the end of the test

At the end of the test, we've covered 58.1 km with a journey breakdown of 60% highway 40% city driving. The trip computer displayed an average fuel economy of 7.4 litres per 100 km.

We made our final stop at the same Petronas station and refuelled using the same "three-click" method. The fuel tank required 4.38 litres of fuel which works out to fuel consumption of 7.5 litres per 100 km as tested.

The X70 has a 60-litre capacity fuel tank which means based on our fuel consumption test result, it has a theoretical range of 800 km per full tank.

Proton X70 1.8T 2WD fuel consumption, 7.5L/100 km possible only if you don't get stuck in traffic jams – Ratings 05

After 20 km of heavy traffic, fuel consumption went up

However, we noticed that spending prolonged time in slow-moving and stop-go traffic, the Proton X70 fuel consumption deteriorates significantly which is typical of a turbocharged engine. If you intend to spend most of your driving in slow city traffic, expect the Proton X70 fuel consumption to rise significantly.

This result of 7.5 litres per 100 km would be achievable if your commute involves a mix of highway and town driving.
