2020 Proton X70 Performance

The Proton X70 Premium 2WD sold in Malaysia is powered by a 1.8-litre turbocharged direct-injection 4-cylinder petrol engine linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The engine pushes out 184 PS and 285 Nm of torque. This Premium variant is front-wheel drive only.

Although it has the worst power-to-weight ratio among other SUVs in the same class and output, the X70 does not feel underpowered to drive. In a straight line, the X70 goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.1 seconds, which is decent for a family SUV.

Braking performance was surprisingly good given how heavy the X70 is. Taking 37.4 metres to come to a complete standstill from 100 km/h (best result after 3 trials). SUVs with a 100 – 0 km/h braking distance of under 39 metres is considered better than average.

Handling is not the X70’s strong suit as it prioritises comfort more than dynamics. Body roll is noticeable, but acceptable for family duties.

2020 Proton X70 Ride Comfort

The X70 has the best-in-class ride comfort despite equipped with the largest-in-class 19-inch alloys with 225/55 R19 profile Continental UC6 tyres. Only when going over abnormally large potholes will you feel a jolt from the suspension.

It also has the quietest cabin in the segment. At 110 km/h, the sound meter recorded an average of 67 dB which is equivalent to the noise levels of having a normal conversation in an office. This is particularly impressive as the X70 achieved this without having double glazed window glass like the Mazda CX-5 – and is still quieter than the Mazda.
