Chinese carmaker, Wuling has been breaking boundaries in Indonesia by becoming one of the best-selling brands in the archipelago. Further solidifying its reputation among Indo buyers is the Wuling Air EV which is its first electric vehicle (EV) model that is also locally assembled (CKD) in Cikarang.
With prices starting from IDR 238 million (~RM 72k), the Air EV is the most affordable EV on sale in Indonesia. While it seems like a steep price, it nevertheless won over many Indonesian buyers ever since it was launched in July 2022.

So much so that it outsold the Perodua Myvi’s Indonesian twin, the Daihatsu Sirion around 6 times more in August 2022. According to sales data compiled by GAIKINDO, 821 units of the Wuling Air EV were sold as compared to only 130 units of the Sirion in the same period.

Though the Sirion might cost less than the Air EV, starting from IDR 227.6 million (~RM 67k), it seems Indonesians aren’t quite that interested in the Myvi’s Indo twin. Among the city car category, the Sirion is placed dead last in August.

Occupying the two spots above the Sirion are the Suzuki S-Presso and Suzuki Ignis with 754 units and 151 units respectively.
With a promising start for the Wuling Air EV, perhaps it might be a sign that Indonesians are ready for an EV revolution that is sweeping the nation. The recent subsidized petrol hike announcement might also convince some Indonesians to switch to an EV though the archipelago’s infrastructure is as underdeveloped as most of its ASEAN neighbours.
