The big grille is coming. Despite the general response of the large vertical grille on the BMW Concept 4, even from China, it appears that BMW is going ahead with the design on the all-new 2020 BMW 4 Series.

In a report by BMW Blog, the new 4 Series is slated to arrive in June and since all events are cancelled globally, the reveal will be online via live stream. This (social distancing) will be the new normal for a while.

In the previous generation 4 Series (F32), the interior mirrors the 3 Series (F30) counterpart since the 4 Series is, in essence, a 3 Series coupe. A rumour surrounding the new 4 Series is that it will feature a different interior from the G20 3 Series. It’s always a battle between cost and product differentiation, and it’ll be interesting to see which prevailed.

As for the powertrain, it’ll likely be the usual BMW range of 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre turbocharged engines, with plug-in hybrid options. Another possibility is a fully electric 4 Series with the drivetrain borrowed from the BMW i4.

And like its predecessor, there’ll be 3 body types – coupe, convertible, and 4-door coupe (Gran Coupe). So the tradition of a 4-door version of a 2-door coupe based on a 4-door sedan continues.
