The Mazda 2 may be an ageing car but it’s definitely one that is catered to enthusiasts. With that being said, after 7 years on the market, the Mazda 2 is definitely due for a new generation that could debut in 2021.

As we had reported before, the team over at Best Car Web has produced some interesting renders of what the next-gen Mazda 2 could look like. Judging by the renders, the Mazda 2 could retain the same Kodo design philosophy of the fantastically gorgeous Mazda 3 Hatchback.

Even the rear has a look that makes it appear like a mini-Mazda 3 and that is surely not a bad thing. Granted the outgoing Mazda 2 is possibly the prettiest-looking in the B-segment hatchback but this rendering already gives the Mazda 2 a knock-out look it surely deserves.

However, possibly the biggest news would be the future of the Mazda 2 itself. We reported that in Europe, the next-gen Mazda 2 could be based on the TNGA-B Toyota Yaris (different from our ASEAN Yaris).

Based on new info provided by Best Car Web, on the other hand, the next-generation of the Mazda 2 will be built on an entirely new platform, at least for the Japanese version.

So, while the Europeans will get a rebadged TNGA Yaris, the Japanese (and hopefully Malaysian) Mazda 2 will get a bespoke platform. Details have been pretty scant but the width is said to be retained from the outgoing Mazda 2 at 1,695 mm.

The next-gen Mazda 2 would also see improvements in fuel efficiency by reducing the weight by up to 100 kg as well as offering a brand-new 3-cylinder 1.5-litre Skyactiv-X mild-hybrid engine.

The next-gen Mazda 2 is expected to be launched in Japan as soon as the summer of 2021 according to Japanese media. Expect the Malaysian debut to follow suit in late-2021 or early-2022 if it goes according to plan.
